Tonny Trindade
de Vilhena is an 18-year-old Dutch player who plays for Feyenoord. From the
club that brought Robin Van Persie, Tonny seems to be part of the next
generation of talented Dutch youngsters coming from Feyenoord. Along with
Stefan de Vrij and Jordy Clasie, the 21-year-old captain and vice-captain,
Tonny is looking to make his mark. He plays in the Centre of Midfield and his
best role is as an attacking playmaker. He made his club debut at the age of
17, and scored his first goal later that year. This year he became the youngest
player to score a brace in a single Eredivisie match. A very mature player,
Tonny has great confidence when he is playing for his team, be it for Club or
Country. Although he has not played for his country, he earned a recent
call-up. He was instrumental in helping his team win the u-17 European
championships in 2011 coming joint top scorer with 3 goals. He scored a goal on
his debut appearance for the Dutch u-21 team in February. A player who is not
afraid of challenges and always looks to play with confidence, Tonny is slowly
emerging as one of the great Dutch youngsters who are playing in the
Eredivisie.
A technically
gifted player, Tonny has great first touch, off the ball movement and
finishing. However, what he is best known for is his passing ability. Sitting
in the centre of midfield he can lay of great passes, short and long, to his
teammates with pinpoint precision. His great special awareness helps people
label him as a typical number 10, however, he is also fairly strong in the
challenge which makes him great to play as the second pivot in midfield. He
is very strong both in attack and defence with the key being his drive to play
and his dedication on the field. Although he is small in stature, his strength
is not to be underestimated. He is very resilient and players find it hard to
take the ball from him. I have likened him to three players I think he has a
similar style of playing with. Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf and Steven
Gerrard. The comparison with Edgar Davids comes with his more defensive
qualities, such as his resilience and the difficulty to dispossess him when he
is on the ball. With Clarence Seedorf, we see his great ability to keep
possession and then give a great pass to an attacking teammate. Like Seedorf
and Gerrard, Tonny has great fitness levels that aid him in the midfield. He has a good ability to keep the ball at his feet with some great first touches as well as
providing the right pass to a teammate without hesitation and with perfect
precision shows his ability and potential to become a star one
day.
It is important
for him to develop correctly and patiently, and I think he will get that
opportunity at Feyenoord. Only 18 right now, his contract runs until 2016. For
him and his development, it is best he remains at Feyenoord, fine tunes his
abilities before moving to one of Europes more elite clubs. The journey is just
beginning for young Tonny, I cant wait to see where the future takes him.
