Maximillian
Meyer is a 17-year-old German who plays for Schalke. In 2012, Max led the
German u-17 team to the European Championship final, finishing top goal scorer
himself. Max plays in the number 10 role just behind the striker. This allows
him flexibility in the attacking midfield area where he can drift to the sides.
He is comfortable playing on both sides of midfield due to his tendency to find
space in midfield. This is one of his most defining qualities. Along with that
Meyer possesses great vision, control and passing. He is gifted when using both
feet and is a great dribbler of the ball. All this attributes together make him
a great number 10 or inside forward assisting the striker. Meyer loves taking
on defenders, and with his great ball control and low center of gravity it
makes it much easier for him to beat the defenders.
Meyer recently
got called up to the Schalke Squad after a great performance in Doha against
Bayern Munich, and the departure of Lewis Holtby to Tottenham. He made his
first team debut on the 16th of February against Mainz coming on as
a substitute for Raffael. He provided an assist to Michel Bastos for the
equalizing goal. He follows in the footsteps of Julian Draxler who also debuted
in the first team at the age of 17. Come next season, it will
be interesting to see whether Meyer gets handed more opportunities in the first
team as he continues to develop his game. The assist and performance in his
debut game provided a good preview of the talents of the 17-year-old. With his
great vision and passing, as well as the ability to beat defenders using great
control and dribbling skills makes Meyer a delight to watch play.
I have likened
him to Mario Gotze due to both players style of play. Both have a low center of
gravity, therefore making it easier for both players to dribble with the ball
controlled by their feet. He is able to play with both feet and can pass the
ball very well. Both players’ natural positions are behind the striker with a
tendency to drift and look for space in the midfield. Meyer, like Gotze, links
play with his teammates very well. I think Meyer, as he matures as a player, can
play a more central role. With good composure and vision, Meyer can provide a
lot of assists in a playmaker role. Germany’s future looks bright with players
like Meyer breaking into the Bundesliga.
