Sebastian Perez is a 20-year-old Center Midfielder from
Colombia. He plays for Atletico Nacional in the Categoria Primera A. He made
his debut in the 2011 Season when he was just 18-years-old. That season he won
the Categoria Primera A. The following year he was also part of the squad that
won the Copa Colombia and the Superliga Colombiana. This means he has won all
the top tier trophies in Colombia under the age of 20. At an international
level he has played for the Colombia under-20 national team in the 2011 U-20
World Cup as well as in the 2013 South American Youth Cup, which Colombia won
and qualified for the 2013 U-20 World Cup. He just finished the World Cup tournament
with the u20 team where they lost to South Korea on penalties in the Round of
16.
However, during these performances Perez really showed the
world why he is set out to be a world-class player. Sebastian Perez plays in
the center of midfield. He plays in the holding position, but does have an
attacking mind and is not afraid of shooting from long distances. A player who is known more for his vision and passing but is also an exceptional reader of the game.
Tactically he is very astute and has great awareness of the play around him. A
fantastic passer, he requires very little time on the ball before delivering a
perfect pass to a teammate. In attack and attacking plays he contributes with
great link up play and slicing passes through defences for the attacker to run
on to. Defensively he is very sound, he tracks back and keeps his marker for
the team and is great at intercepting and reading opponents passes. He closes
down attackers very well and then easily breaks into attack. He has great
vision allowing him to start a counter attack from a long distance pass.
That is one of the reasons I have likened him to Xabi Alonso.
A great passer, short and long and a very good long shot taker makes him
similar to Xabi Alonso through his style of play. However, he is also
defensively very tactical and similar to Busquets and the Barcelona mentality
of closing down the attacker.
Perez is a fantastic player, who has just been invited to
try out at the Emirates stadium in August after the Arsenal scouts were
impressed with his ability at the U-20 World Cup. Only time and how he does at
the trials will tell for what the future of Sebastian Perez holds.
